Seminar 19th May 2006

Towards an EU Strategy for Comprehensive Baltic Sea Security

The Nordic Network for Security Studies, the Aleksanteri Institute, the Defence Committee of the Parliament of Finland and the Aleksanteri Institute organised a seminar "Towards an EU Strategy for Comprehensive Baltic Sea Security" on 19th May 2006 at the Parliament of Finland.

The Baltic Sea Region comprises countris of traditional non-alignment, NATO members and those seeking more efficent EU security cooperation. Despite the different positions in their security policies, the countries of the region share growing awareness that the EU´s Justice and Home Affairs Mechanisms and the Union´s progress towards common foreign and defence policies offer the best chance of strengthening European citizens´collective security.

The seminar aimed to clarify the emerging security threats at the Baltic Sea Region. The seminar also generated comprehensive policy guidelines for decision makers both at the national and EU level to upgrade the security assessments at the Baltic Sea Region.

There will be a publication about the presentations.
