New Cold War Research workshop in Helsinki 1-2.11.2010
Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, Finland.

Venue: Aleksanteri Institute (The Finnish Centre of Russian and Eastern European Studies), University of Helsinki, Unioninkatu 33, 2nd floor meeting room.
Organizers: NORCENCOWAR network and Competition is Socialist Society project and Aleksanteri Institute Cold War Research Group.

The purpose of this workshop is to draw special attention to the interconnected relations of trade, technology and competition during the Cold War era. The Cold War period has been viewed by the mainstream literature as an East-West juxtaposition, emphasizing conflict and confrontation between the blocs. The focus of the New Cold War Research workshop is, however, on cooperation and interactions between East and West, which have been mostly overlooked or underestimated. The workshop intends to look at Europe as an arena where East and West met and established relations that resembled, in many cases, the traditional pre-Cold War contact networks.

Reassessing Cold War Europe.

Edited by
Sari Autio-Sarasmo and Katalin Miklóssy.

Published by Routledge 2011.

This book presents a comprehensive reassessment of Europe in the Cold War period, 1945–1991. Contrary to popular belief, it shows that relations between East and West were based not only on confrontation and mutual distrust, but also on collaboration. The authors reveal that – despite opposing ideologies – there was in fact considerable interaction and exchange between different Eastern and Western actors (such as states, enterprises, associations, organisations and individuals) irrespective of the Iron Curtain. The book introduces a new paradigm of multipolar-multilevelled interaction that opens up new directions to the study of Cold War.

The occasion will be held on November 1st, 2010 (Monday) starting at 5pm, at The Aleksanteri Institute (Unioninkatu 33) 2nd floor, conference room.

Refreshments will be served!
