The panel discusses life trajectories and decision-making during transition based on research material of thematic interviews collected at three phases in 1993-2000 and 2015-17 in Saint Petersburg. The research team addresses the redefinition and re-evaluation of education, professions and opting for varius coping strategies in family vs. work life. The special research focus is on the social status and social positions of interviewees and their families and its variations: continuity, zigzagging, redefinition and discontinuity. The interviews show how the individual or family statuses often break or zigzag leading sometimes to dramatic changes of social roles. The transformation of the social structure is seen as the cumulative result of individual and family choices and their decision-making.
