Paying for Putinism: Workers’ Precarity in the Current Crisis

Although the legitimacy of the Putin presidencies has been built on the promise of greater economic stability, the collapse of revenues from oil and gas as well as the effect of sanctions resulting from Russia’s international affairs have produced another economic crisis in Russia.
Echoing the nineteen-nineties, this has resulted in growing insecurity for many ordinary workers, with pay arrears, payment in kind, administrative leave and straightforward unemployment all rising, and workers resorting to familiar ‘survival strategies’ to make ends meet.
This presentation will draw upon employment and income data to establish current trends in employment and income insecurity, as well as recent ethnographic research exploring workers’ experiences of precarity.
