Russian-speaking Religious Communities and Identities in St Petersburg and Helsinki Metropolitan Area

My presentation focuses on and compares Russian neo-charismatic/Pentecostal churches in Russia and Finland through inquiring how Russians engage with the Evangelical churches and how they construct a conversion meaningful identity. The presentation discusses how the social and political changes of post-Soviet Russia as well as immigration to Finland are experienced in religious terms and have social implications that are reflected in identity building as a Russian and an Evangelical. It also discusses the role of minority churches in two societies and transnationalism of those churches. The aim is also to focus on the role of religion in the integration of Russian-speaking minority in Finland. The neo-charismatic/Pentecostal churches in Russia were mostly founded by western missionaries in the 1990s but now have Russian leaders. By contrast, the churches in Finland under study are founded by Russian-speaking believers. The presentation shows some preliminary findings of my research on the Russian-speaking religious communities in Finland and compares them with the results of my previous research on neo-charismatic movement in St Petersburg.
