Panel abstract: Nikolai Bukharin - An Alternative which Did Not Come True?

The panel focuses on the Bolshevik leader Nikolai Bukharin, executed in 1938 after a "show trial" and discusses his ideas as a possible alternative to the Stalinist modernisation. In the 1990's, there has come up much new material on Bukharin, which has not yet been fully evaluated by the historical research. Nevertheless, it is obvious that these materials will significantly change the received picture of him as a politician and Marxist theoretician. It remains the much discussed question of how inevitable the Stalinist course of Russia's development was, a course which was chosen after the defeat of Bukharin in 1929.
