Facts about Finland and Helsinki

Finland is a member of the European Union. The currency of Finland is Euro (€). Approximately 5.4 million people live in Finland (end of 2012), with the majority concentrated in its southern regions. In terms of area, it is the eight largest country in Europe and the most sparsely populated country in the European Union. Politically, it is a parliamentary republic with a central government based in the capital of Helsinki.

The second most northern capital city in the world is an unique mix of western and eastern influences. Helsinki was established as a trading town by King Gustav I of Sweden in 1550.
Czar Alexander the I of Russia moved the Finnish capital from Turku to Helsinki in 1812 to reduce Swedish influence in Finland and bring the capital closer to St. Petersburg. Following the Great Fire of Turku in 1827, The Royal Academy of Turku, at the time the country's only university, was also relocated to Helsinki, and eventually became the modern University of Helsinki.

Today Helsinki has a population of 610,601 and an urban population of 1,159,211. It is the world's northenmost metro area of over one million people, and the city is the northernmost capital of an EU member state. Helsinki is Finland's major political, educational, financial, cultural and research centre as well as one of northern Europe's major cities.

Weather

Helsinki´s northern location nearby the sea causes rather windy conditions. We recommend you to take some warm clothes with you. Current weather information can be found at: http://www.fmi.fi/weather/local.html.

The Conference venue

The Conference will be held at the Main Building of the University of Helsinki (address Unioninkatu 34/ Fabianinkatu 33), which is located at the Senate Square at the heart of city's historic and iconic centre. The main building was designed by architect G.L Engel and it was completed in 1832. Construction was continued over a century later when additional new side was annexed to the original building in 1937.

The Main Building of the University of Helsinki is located in Helsinki City centre in one kilometer radius from the hotels we are recommending, from the main railway station, from the main bus terminal and from the harbor. All basic services are found nearby the conference venue including a pharmacy. For leisure there are great opportunities for shopping. Souviers can be bought from shops located at the Senate Squere or in the Market Square that is located at the city harbor only few hundred meters away from the conference venue.

You can reach the city centre from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport by bus 615. The airport is situated some 20 km from the City centre. The bus trip costs 4,5 € and the last stop in the Helsinki City centre is at the main railway station. Taxi from the airport to the centre costs about 45 €.

You can easily plan your trip by using the Helsinki Journey Planner: http://www.reittiopas.fi/en/ Write in the first slot "from" for example 'Airport', in the second slot "to" for example the address of your hotel. Then choose time and date.
