The citizen as the subject of politics in Russian media

Mass media not only provides the interaction between state and society, it also enters into social partnership. On one hand, the government has an opportunity to inform the public about political intentions and results of work, as well as possible approaches to solving actual social and political problems. On one hand, mass media helps citizens to participate in the management of society. The audience can express their opinions in mass media about the efficiency of the activity of socio-political institutes, political process and political system. Besides this, the press is a source of information about public consciousness and social initiatives of citizens. The possibility of the citizens to express their opinions on topical issues of political life is an important component of public dialogue, which is organized by the press.  In order to research citizen as the subject of politics I made content analysis of Russian periodicals «Rossiyskaya gazeta» and «Novgorodskie Vedomosti», «Pskovskaya Pravda» during the period from 1986 to 2011. For the purposes of this research, I have sorted out categories of analysis: 1) the author of the article, 2) the subject of the publication, 3) the number of opinions in the article.  Also I conducted an expert interview with Russian political journalists, editors and politicians about: how media interaction with audience, what was the main position in political agenda, how the press organized public dialogue and who was the main hero in the press in different time periods.
