Bettina Renz

Dr Bettina Renz obtained her MA and MSc in Russian Studies at the University of Edinburgh. She completed her PhD at the Centre for Russian and East European Studies, University of Birmingham in 2005. She has previously lectured at King's College London at the Royal Air Force College and was an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Birmingham's European Research Institute before being appointed to a lectureship in International Security at the University of Nottingham in 2007.

Dr Renz's main area of research is Russian security and defence policy. Specifically, she has researched civil-military relations, media-military relations, security sector reform, and the perception of security threats in contemporary Russia. Her book, Securitising Russia: The Domestic Politics of Putin (co-authored with Edwin Bacon) was published by Manchester University Press in 2006. Current research focuses on reforms of the security sector in contemporary Russia with a particular emphasis on institutions dealing with military operations other than war. Having lectured at King's College London at the Royal Air Force College from 2006-2007, she is also interested in the role of air power in modern conflict.
Dr Renz is a Honorary Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Russian and East European Studies at the University of Birmingham.

Aleksanteri Institute had the pleasure of having Dr Renz as a visiting fellow for two months in 2013.
