Registration & Submissions

Abstract Submission

Individual paper abstracts of max. 300 words were invited until May 21st, 2010. Notification of acceptance has been sent by e-mail to the accepted applicants in June 2010.

Panel Proposals

Proposals for panels of max. 500 words were invited until May 21st, 2010. Panels should consist of 3-4 panelists. Chair and discussant are optional.

Paper Submission

Paper submission will be opened in August 2010 on a separate web-form. Please don't submit full papers on the abstract submission form.

Guideline for Sessions & Papers and Publication

Guideline for Sessions

Here is a rough guideline for session timetables. Please note that each panel is entitled to adjust it to their preferences.

90 minute sessions:
Chair: 5 minutes - introduction of panel and panellists
Panellists: 10-15 minutes
Discussant: 5-10 minutes for comments

Chair: 10 minutes - introduction of panellists and topics, gives questions for panellists
Panellists: 10 minutes - topic chosen in relation to their paper, answering to the questions given by chair
Discussant: 10-15 minutes - summing up the discussion

The chair will introduce the panel and its participants (max 5 minutes). Each panellist will have the maximum of 15 minutes for their presentations. The discussant will have 5-10 minutes to give their comments, which can be either direct questions on each of the papers or/ and general remarks on the broader themes discussed in the panel. Finally there is time for questions from the audience.

There is a PC and a possibility to show Power Points in every lecture hall.

Papers and Publication

The completed papers are supposed to contain approximately 10 pages and they are asked to be sent to fcree-aleksconf [at] by 3rd of October. The papers will be circulated amongst panel & roundtable chairs and discussants prior to the conference.

Selected papers will be published in Finnish review of East European studies Idäntutkimus in 2011. They will be translated into Finnish. Furthermore the papers will be published in English at the web site of Idäntutkimus, as well the rest of the selected papers, about 10, which will be published at the web site only.

Participants will be informed after the conference about the publication process of the papers. Those who are invited to contribute to the review Idäntutkimus will be informed by the 1st of December 2010. They will be allowed to revise their papers before publication. The deadline for the revision is 31st of January 2011.

Helsinki´s location nearby the sea causes rather windy conditions which makes the capital of Finland colder than other southern cities and towns of Finland. Conference venue

The Conference will be held at the Main Building of the University of Helsinki (address Unioninkatu 34).

The Main Building of the University of Helsinki is located in Helsinki City centre in one kilometer radius from the hotels we are recommending, from the main railway station, from the main bus terminal and from the harbor.

You can reach the city centre from the Helsinki-Vantaa airport by bus 615. The airport is situated some 20 km from the City centre. The bus trip costs 4 € and the last stop in the Helsinki City centre is at the main railway station. Taxi from the airport to the centre costs about 40 €.
