Aleksanteri Conference

Trans-systemic Cultural Interactions

The panel deals with transnational and transsystemic cultural interactions during the Cold War.

Firstly, the panel focuses on the East-West exchanges of scholarly and scientific communities as well as on cultural interactions within the bloc. Secondly, the panel examines the images of the “West” in East-Central Europe and in the Soviet Union. While the first two presentations bring up case studies of “smaller” states, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and their perceptions of the West, the third paper focuses on the Soviet images of East-Central Europe. This offers an interesting twist on the concept of "East-West" divisions as Budapest, Prague, or Warsaw were "Western" seen from Moscow (not only in terms of physical, but also in terms of mental geography).
