Early Cold War Media and Propaganda: Cases from Scandinavia and Estonia

The panel focuses on the issues and topics of early Cold War propaganda, the channels it used to reach its audience, its concepts and reception. Four papers concentrate on media, historiography and the propaganda-producing and circulating institutions both in Scandinavia and Estonia.

Although papers embrace different topics they have a common message as well. The eraly Cold War was a transitory period when ideological, rhetorical and mental concepts were tested on the both sides of the Iron Curtain, and, consequently, also the Baltic Sea. Papers focus on Scandinavian, US and Soviet progranda, and propaganda-perception, the use of different media sources and historiography as propaganda-carriers. It is also quite evident that a panel dealing with propaganda can not avoid touching issues of political, diplomatic, and intelligence history.
