Nordic Russian and Eastern European Studies Conference
Intentions, Interactions and Paradoxes in Post-Socialist Space
The Conference will be held at the University of Helsinki premises in the address Unioninkatu 40 (Metsätalo). The venue is located in Helsinki city centre.
Panels and papers
Here is a rough guideline for session timetables. All the panels will last 105 min. Most of the panels include four presentations.
Chair: 5 minutes - introduction of panel and panelists
Panelists: 10-15 minutes for presentation
Discussant: 5-10 minutes for comments
The chair will introduce the panel and its participants (max 5 minutes). Each panelist will have the maximum of 15 minutes for their presentations. The discussant will have 5-10 minutes to give their comments, which can be either direct questions on each of the papers or/ and general remarks on the broader themes discussed in the panel. Finally there is time for questions from the audience.
It's up to every panel to decide if they want to circulate papers in advance among the panel members – the organisers will not do this automatically beforehand.
There is a PC and a possibility to show Power Points in every lecture hall.
Guidelines for participants who receive the conference travel grant
Travel grants were allotted to some of the participants. Information about this has been sent to the grant recipients in the acceptation letters. We have booked accommodation (either in a single / double hotel room) to all recipients of the conference travel grant from Thursday (23 May) to Saturday (25 May). If you plan to arrive earlier or depart later, you should book and pay all the additional nights.
Concerning covering your travel costs, we would like to offer two options:
1. Conference organisers will directly book and pay your flights if the prices are within the limits of your travel grant. If you prefer this option, please fill in the additional information requested in the online registration form. The sooner you fill in the registration form, the better chances there are to get flights that convene to your travel grant. Please note that after we have booked your flights, there's no possibility to change the tickets.
2. You will book and pay your flights and conference organisers will reimburse the costs up to the granted sum. If the tickets are cheaper than the granted sum, then we will reimburse only the actual costs. Please note that the reimbursement will take place only after the conference in June, and the transmission to your bank account may take from two to four weeks. Original receipts and boarding passes are required to be attached to the reimbursement form.
We would like to inform that the conference organisers won't cover airport transfers in your home country and in Helsinki. If you have any questions about the travel grant, please contact the conference coordinator Eeva Korteniemi.
The participants who don't receive the conference travel grant are requested to cover their travel and accommodation costs and to also make necessary bookings themselves. We advise you to book your accommodation in Helsinki early, because hotels (especially in the city centre) are often booked. Hotels close to the conference venue include:
Holiday Inn Helsinki City Centre
Hotel Cumulus Kaisaniemi
Hotel Cumulus Hakaniemi
Scandic Grand Marina
