Fields of research in Biotechnology at the Department are Animal and Plant Biotechnology. Important research questions in Animal Biotechnology is i.a. genomics. Important research questions in Plant Biotechnology are the sustainability of agriculture and food systems, yield formation, genomics, developmental biology, defence mechanisms, bioenergy and the use of energy, genomics, the environmental effects of production and adaptation to climate change.

Part of the research in Plant Biotechnology is or have been done in the Centres of Excellences of the Academy of Finland (the Plant Signal Research and the Metapopulation Research Group), in the Biocentrum Helsinki research group organisation (Functional Genomics of Organogenesis in Plants)  and in the Viikki Research Groups in Biosciences (Plant Biology). Some of the Biotechnology PhD students belong to one of the graduate schools.
