Postgraduate Applicants

If you wish to apply for the PhD studies at the University of Helsinki, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry you are required to hold a degree comparable to the appropriate Finnish Master's degree (Master of Science in Agriculture and Forestry or Master of Food Sciences). In addition, the topic of the applicant's thesis or dissertation should relate to the fields of research represented at the departments of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. Admission is based on the applicant's previous studies and language proficiency as well as on the resources of the department/major subject in question.
The following documents must be enclosed with the application:
- Your Master's degree certificate from a higher education institution
- Your BSc and MSc university transcripts, which indicates the grading system of the institution
- A test score of a language test you have taken
- A statement of purpose in your own words
- The title and summary of your Master's thesis in Finnish, Swedish or English. (max. one page)
- Preliminary research plan
- You should also clarify how you intend to finance your studies
Applicants without knowledge of Finnish or Swedish are required to have a proficiency certificate in English. Only original test results directly from the testing organisation are accepted. Table of required language test scores and ways to prove the language skills can be found here. At the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry the required score level is the communication level (after September 11, 2008).
Please print the application form and send it with all the documents requested to the Faculty Office. All the photocopies must be officially certified. You have to find the financially support by yourself.

Applications for postgraduate (PhD) studies are processed throughout the year. The whole process normally takes around two months.
