Visiting student status

Faculty-specific procedures

Each faculty of the University of Helsinki has its own individual application procedure regarding visiting students (i.e. non-exchange/freemover students). Here you can find some general guidelines on how to apply. Please note that the application requirements may vary from faculty to faculty.

Who can apply for visiting student status?

If your home university does not have a student exchange agreement with the University of Helsinki, but you would like to study at the University of Helsinki for an academic term/semester or year – and then transfer your credits to your home university – you can apply for visiting student status.

Application enclosures

Visiting student applicants must usually include in application all the attachments listed below.

  • Your transcript, which clearly indicates the grading system of your home institution
  • The test score of a language test you have taken. For details, see the language requirements.
  • A study plan that point out the courses you intend to complete at the University of Helsinki during your visit.
  • A statement of purpose in your own words explaining the reasons for your choice of courses and how studying at the University of Helsinki relates to your career objectives. This is the core document: an application without the statement cannot be processed.

Requirements on certificates and transcripts

  • All copies must be legalized by the institution that has issued the original document or by a notary public.
  • All attached documents must be in Finnish, Swedish or English.
  • All translations must be done by official translators. The translations must bear the stamp and signature of the translator.
  • The application with all the required enclosures must be at the appropriate faculty by the closing date at the latest.
  • The application with all the required enclosures must be mailed via regular (air) mail or by a courier service to the faculty in question. Emailed or faxed applications or documents will not be accepted.
  • Your application can be rejected if any of the required enclosures are missing.
  • The authenticity of all documents submitted to the University of Helsinki will be examined. The use of forged or altered documents will lead to the rejection of the applicant.
