The Board

The Board is the supreme decision-making body of the University of Helsinki. The tasks of the Board include:

  • deciding on the central objectives of the university’s operations and finances, the strategy and steering principles
  • deciding on the university's operative and financial planning as well as on the budget, and prepare the financial statements
  • controlling the university's asset management and use, unless the Board has transferred the authority to the Rector
  • organising accounting and asset management monitoring
  • approving agreements that are significant or principled for the university, and issuing statements on major university-related matters of principle
  • on behalf of the university, approving a performance agreement with the Ministry of Education
  • appointing the Rector(s) and deciding on their work distribution, and discharging the Rector if there is an acceptable and justified reason for that, taking into account the nature of the assignment
  • approving the University Statutes and other regulations for general organisation, and deciding on the university's operational structure
  • making a proposal to the Ministry of Education on changing the university's educational responsibility
  • deciding on the number of students accepted to the university.

The Rector is responsible for the preparation, presentation and implementation of matters processed by the Board.

The Board of the University of Helsinki 2010-2013

The existing Board of the University of Helsinki consists of 13 members: seven from the academic community and six from outside the University. The Board’s term of office will continue until the end of 2013.

External to the University

  • Ari Helenius

    Ari Helenius, Ph.D., (b. 1944) is a Professor of Biochemistry at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zürich. He has previously worked as a professor at Yale University, among other positions. Helenius has received several national and international awards for his work. He has written more than 270 scientific publications.

  • Eero Huovinen

    Eero HuovinenTh.D., (b. 1944) is the bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Diocese of Helsinki. He has previously worked as a Professor of Dogmatics and the Dean of the Faculty of Theology at the University of Helsinki. Huovinen has served as a member of the Finnish Cultural Foundation’s Supervisory Board and the Sitra research board, as well as the Vice President of the Lutheran World Federation, among others.

  • Jaana Husu-Kallio

    Dr. Jaana Husu-Kallio (b. 1959) is the Director General of the Finnish Food Safety Authority. She has held various positions in the research and managerial organisations of Valio, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the European Commission. Husu-Kallio has published scientific articles in the field of microbiology.

  • Gunvor Kronman

    Gunvor Kronman, M.A., M.B.A., (b. 1963) is the Director of the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre Hanasaari and the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation. She holds several positions of trust in various organisations, including the national broadcasting company Yle, the Konstsamfundet cultural foundation and the Plan Finland Foundation. Kronman has also worked for the Red Cross in areas such as Africa.

  • Jorma Ollila

    Jorma Ollila, M.Sc. (Eng.), M.Sc. (Pol.Sci.), M.Sc. (Econ.), (b. 1950) is the Chairman of the Board of Directors at Shell and previous Chairman of the Board and CEO at Nokia. In 2008, he was nominated to be the Vice President of the European Union’s High Level Advisory Group. As a student, Ollila was the President of the National Union of University Students in Finland.

  • Antti Tanskanen

    Minister Antti Tanskanen, Ph.D. (Econ.), (b. 1946) has held the positions of the CEO of the OKO Bank Group and the President of the Academy of Finland, among others. He has also held the positions of Rector, Dean and Professor of Economics at the University of Jyväskylä. Currently, Tanskanen is the Chairman of the Board at the Finnish Institute of International Affairs and the State Pension Fund.

Professors
  • Elina Ikonen

    Elina Ikonen , M.D., Ph.D., (b. 1961) is the Professor of cell and developmental biology at the Institute of Biomedicine. In 2010–2014, Ikonen will conduct research on cholesterol and its transport mechanisms as an Academy Professor. Ikonen has served as a member of the scientific advisory board of the University of Helsinki as well as the Research Council of the Faculty of Medicine.

  • Jukka Kekkonen

    Jukka Kekkonen, LL.D., (b. 1953), is the Professor in Legal History and Roman Law at the University of Helsinki. During the years 2004-2009 he acted as the Dean of the Faculty of Law. He has written eight books on the legal history of Finland and Europe and is currently coordinating a research project which examines the effects of the bank crisis in the 1990s.

  • Markku Leskelä

    Academy Professor, DTech Markku Leskelä, (b. 1950) is the Head of the Laboratory of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Helsinki. He has also held the position of Professor at the universities of Oulu and Turku, as well as the Helsinki University of Technology. Leskelä also holds positions at the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, the Finnish Society of Sciences and Letters, and several foundations.

  • Juhana Aunesluoma

    Juhana Aunesluoma, Ph.D., M.Sc. (Pol.Sci.)(b. 1967) is a University Lecturer of political history at the Department of Social Science History. His particular achievement is the development of lecturing in English within the Department, including the organising of two international master’s programmes. Aunesluoma has completed his doctorate at the Oxford University.

  • Ragna Rönnholm

    Ragna Rönnholm, Ph.D., (b. 1956) is a research coordinator at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Since 2007, she has been the Chairman of the Finnish Union of University Researchers and Teachers, as well as a member of the University Senate. Rönnholm has also worked as a researcher in Sweden and in Switzerland.

Students
  • Johanna Ahola-Launonen

    Johanna Ahola (b. 1983), B.Soc.Sc., B.Sc., is a student of genetics and social and moral philosophy. She is a member of both the University Senate and the Election Collegium. Ahola has also served in the boards of the University of Helsinki Student Union and the National Union of University Students in Finland, where her area of responsibility has been educational policy.

  • Leena Pihlajamäki

    Leena Pihlajamäki (b.1984) is a student of theology, majoring in theological ethics and social ethics. Pihlajamäki has acted as Chair of the Board for the University of Helsinki Student Union and also as Vice President for the National Union of University Students in Finland. She has also served in the University's committee for community relations.
