Figure below: Hits to the main page since ... until
1/June/07
- Last update. The years with WebEc have been rewarding to me, I hope the site has been useful for you. Maybe somebody is still visiting the site? Nowadays I concentrate on distributed learning and instructional design with collaborative tools.
14/February/07
- I will check all links in May before I stop updating these pages.
30/August/06
- All links checked. Some pages updated.
5/April/06
- I decided to give up maintaining WebEc totally on it's 13th birthday (17.5.2007). During the past months I have just been checking the validity of links and removing bad links.
6/February/06
- I included the search page back. It uses the VLib search engine.
28/December/05
- Please note that I do not take in any more entries to WebEc. It's better to contact Bill instead.
4/April/05
- Links were checked. Please note that I do not take in any more entries to WebEc. It's better to contact Bill instead.
4/April/05
29/December/04
- I will start a new effort that is nearer to my current profession than WebEc.
23/December/04
- WebEc links were checked and new revision released. Please note that the mirrors outside Finland will not be available anymore. All mirror sites will include a redirect to the original site in Helsinki.
2/September/04
- WebEc was revised. I will not maintain the List of Economics Journals anymore.
12/April/04

1/December/04
- WebEc 10.1 was published.
4/August/03
- WebEc 9.3 was published.
index.html (framed) and WebEc.html (formerly not framed) are now identical. The no-frames version is from now on named as framnone.html (see the No frames -link on each category page).
Since WebEc 3.2 I have removed 1019 links from WebEc. Here are some reasons why they have been removed:
not found URLs
object permanently moved
no connection
auth required
no such host
forbidden request
file not found
23/April/03
2/January/03
30/August/02
- WebEc 8.3 was published. Apologies for not having enough time to evaluate all suggestions since April.
30/April/02
02/Jan/02
- WebEc 8.1 was published with not very many new additions.
01/Oct/30
- WebEc 7.3 was published late and updated only partially with too little time. I'm sorry. Maybe we have better situation next year?
01/Apr/30
- WebEc 7.2 was published with too little time. I will be back in August.
01/Jan/2
- WebEc 7.1 was published - it included about 1500 items. Yes, this is the seventh year working with WebEc ... anyone out there that would like to maintain a section or two with me?
00/Aug/21
00/Apr/3
00/Jan/3
- WebEc 6.1 was published.
I don't remember what kind of changes I have made since the Summer update, but there are 1534 list items in the database and many more links in WebEc. 31 items I have remembered to mark as new entries and about 40 were thrown out because of changes in contents, outdated information or dead addresses in this update. I don't take out sites/addresses that are temporarily down; only those that are dead in two updates in row and I cannot find the service anywhere else on the Web.
00/Jan/31
- Mon, 31 Jan 2000 19:31:16 MST:
99/June/24
- I have made quite a lot visible changes since the last update. WebEc is now based on frames. It has been 2-3 years since frames were introduced to browsers and people have had hard times in using them and new problems are here too. I hope you will not find those in WebEc. Frames have been an option in WebEc through all these years, but now I have changed to them, since most of the browsers handle them 'well'. If you want to use WebEc without frames go to a specific page, click the noframes-link or use your browsers back-button and the old WebEc-page's long menu to go around.
- Other things: the links in WebEc were checked on 24th of June. If you bump into a dead link in WebEc you can always send me a note. When I don't find specific servers while going through the links I give them some mercy and postpone their removal of the server to the next update. Sites are sometimes temporarily down. What else? I don't remember. I sould document more ... but that is not fun!
- I wonder why I wrote this long this time. Maybe because it is midsummer!?
99/Jan/27
- Cascading Style Sheets are used in WebEc. The search page is lighter to browse than before. The journals-page is divided into two parts both having just one column, because two columns do not look right with frames and the file was too big. A search form can be found on each WebEc-page. In the next update JEL-categories serve as keywords in the search-forms. I didn't have the time to make it work in this update ...
98/Nov/08
- New frames system was developed. The best way to start browsing is choosing the main and sub-categories from the left frame.
98/Oct/28
- WebEc 4.4 was published ... actually 4 times stopping finally around 4th of November, because I always found something to correct ...
98/Oct/05
- I changed the categories somewhat ... I hope you can now better find what you are looking for. I also changed the system of naming the SEARCH FILES, now they have real names, not numbers. I had to break a bit more of my broken English in naming the files because of the special characters ... I apologize for the many spelling and other errors that surely will be found in this version. This is a race with changing contents, dead links and endogenous ability to create too much work. You may comment when you find errors.
98/July/31
- I was told that WebEc is
98/July/21
- I will put a button to each page with which all related links within WebEc will be found.
- I will perhaps start to use style sheets in WebEc.
98/July/16
- I noticed that the number of distinct hosts served by WebEc during 1997 at the mirror sites was 54 574. They can't all be robots ... ;-). Thanks for coming. I'm suprised.
98/July/04
- I planned a new structure for WebEc's categories. Data, news, institutions, communication, libraries, social sciences and publishing categories will vanish and be plugged in to other categories.
98/July/01
98/June/16
- WebEc was dead during 12-16th of June on the Helsinki server. I'm sorry about the inconvenience. This was not due to anything I did or didn't do. Please bookmark some of WebEc's mirrors to avoid future problems!
98/June/08
- WebEc was reviewed and recommended in the book 'Investing Online' and at the 1998 Book Expo America in Chicago in June 1998 it was announced that 'Investing Online - Dealing in Global Markets On The Internet' was the only book to win two 1998 Benjamin Franklin awards.
98/June/01
- WebEc search page got a new look because the search engine was changed from wwwwais to waisfind at NetEc.
- For the same reason the interface on each page was altered.
- Journals' issn numbers, when found, were added to the entries.
- The journals page also is now in two columns. The idea might be applied to other pages in WebEc too, if/when I have the time.
- During the past 16 months I have removed over 600 URL's from WebEc. Either the sites were out of date, contents or browsing policies had changed to the wrong direction, services had disappeared from the cyberspace etc. ...
98/May/22
- WebEc has been selected for inclusion in the Britannica Internet Guide (http://www.britannica.com).
98/Apr/03
- WebEc version 4.2 was released.
There is now about 1500 list items found in the data, so when you propose new additions to WebEc please check if the site is already included to save some work from both of us; there might be some sites that are difficult for me to remember ;-).
98/Mar/01
- Lesson 1 in using a wysiwyg editor: Don't use it! :-)
98/Feb/28
- The news services can be searched from WebEc by entering "news" in the box. Try continent and country names too!
98/Feb/28
- I put the links of BizEc International in WebEc. Thanks to Will Cardwell for collecting excellent links! We had a nice project but time is scarce ...
98/Feb/20
- Mail from ENTERWeb: You might or might not already know it, but you are the recipient of a 5 star ENTERWeb awards in the "economics" category.
98/Feb/06
- Should I start using a wysiwyg-editor provided by a operating system manufacturer? (;-)) Hard decision ... this update tells what I have decided.
98/Jan/13
98/Jan/12
- The next update will contain only part of the new information received. User feedback
has been read and evaluated as always.
98/Jan/11
97/Dec/04
- Mail from:
which features only the best sites on the internet has selected your site for inclusion in our guide.
97/Oct/07
- I made a "frames on/off"-feature on each of the JELlish pages and made the
journals and search pages slightly smaller in bytes.
97/Oct/01
- WebEc v.3.4 with 1380 list items was
published.
97/Sep/15
- I removed from the WebEc main page the deeper level
categories; longer and more detailed index and saved the result as the root
of WebEc. It is a smaller file that does not contain the subcategories; only the main
categories. Hopefully you will not this inconvenient. The root is faster to load now than
before.
97/Aug/27
- I am sorry that the Helsinki server has been down for quite long periods during the
summer. It might be a good idea to bookmark an other mirror
too. BTW, a new record has been reached: I have not edited these files for seven weeks!
97/Jul/22
- Received mail from Internic: "The web sites
http://www.helsinki.fi/WebEc/journals.html and http://www.helsinki.fi/WebEc/ have been
selected for the "InterNIC Academic Guide to the Internet. The National Science Foundation funded Guide has
been created especially for the higher education community. The topical listings of the
Guide focus exclusively on the interests of the higher education research community.
Congratulations on your site's selection! ".
97/Jul/08
- I made some cosmetic changes like: adding a small menu to the search
page, adding links to journal items to each category on the search-page, blockquoting
the lists and making some changes to the Events Calendar. Now I start doing this until October.
97/Jul/07
- I updated WebEc and finally got rid of old bookmarks and mail. In the next update new
will be new and not something "I should check when I have the time".
97/Jun/17
- Changed the image
not to oscillate.
97/May/22
- Checked the addresses included in WebEc.
97/May/14
- Added two new items on the menu's on each page and changed the order of the existing
ones.
- The items in the Journals' list can be listed from
the menu in each category with NetEc's wais-search. You can search
them with codes like JJELF
for example in the case of international economics.
- The other addition is Christian Zimmerman's "Associations and societies"-page;
as the Assocs link on each page.
97/May/12
- I made an Events Calendar with
the help of Petrus' scripts. I hope people
will start using it. A link to it is found on each page. (The events calendar is no longer available. See other services.)
97/Apr/28
- Mail from NEDSITE: "NEDSITE has reviewed your site at
http://www.helsinki.fi/WebEc/webecf.html and has decided to award your site with our
´BEST OF THE NET AWARD´ for a great contribution of valueness to the web. Our award
recognizes Web sites that meet our stringent criteria for ´Informational Value´."
97/Apr/28
- Received mail from Argus: "The "Digital Librarian's Award" has replaced
the "Guide of the Month" feature. Former "Guide of the Month" winners
are now considered "Digital Librarian's Award" recipients. To see the Digital
Librarian's Award link, visit: http://www.clearinghouse.net/dla_past.html".
97/Apr/11
- WebEc v.3.2 was published. The
database entries found via the search page do not yet work
exactly as I want them to, but that will hopefully be fixed in the July update. Many
entries were left out in this update, because they do not fit to WebEc's profile. Some of
them will be included in BizEc that is more
business oriented. (BizEc's links were integrated into WebEc in 1998 and BizEc is no
longer updated.)
97/Apr/01
- The April's Fool finished this update with the 69th new entry :-). I should not have
counted ...
97/Mar/15
- I decided to make a prototype of DynEcon
in the spring or summer. DynEcon will be more interactive than WebEc. This means a
considerable amount of programming and that might imply that it will actually be ready in the
autumn ... if ever. :-)
97/Mar/02
97/Feb/26
- I started to make a new search page that works with the codes.
The links produce a search that lists all related entries for that category. This was done
because it is easier to put keywords in the entries than putting the entry on each related
page. The main function of the service/entry will determine where it is located within WebEc.
The search engines will show you a broader view of WebEc's contents. You
can for example find 'data' entries this way.
97/Feb/22
- I added Barry Schachter's HoPEc to the
menus on each of WebEc's JEL-pages and included Christian Zimmerman's EDIRC there too; as the Depts link.
97/Feb/21
- I removed the Internet and Commerce page and enhanced the Economics
of Networks page with related information. Also from the Publications page the
"On-line texts in Internet Economics" were moved there.
97/Feb/10
- I changed the Alta Vista link on each of WebEc's JEL-pages to use NEAR
instead of OR. This reduces the amount of hits considerably and hopefully produces
more relevant results.
97/Feb/07
- I made some experiments with Alta Vista to build a search form that makes a search
within specific servers. The results will be included in some of WebEc's pages.
Maybe the data section first, but we will see. The data page will most likely disappear
and the entries will be moved to the appropriate categories.
97/Jan/21
I got mail from
InterNIC Net Scout: "Your site--WebEc--has been chosen as one of the selections for
the Scout Report (January 10, 1997), the premier weekly collection of useful Internet
sites for discerning Internauts."
97/Jan/19
- I added JEL codes to each list item found in WebEc. You must add "JEL" in front of each category and the search will list you the items coded with those keys (example: JELF, JELF1, etc. for International Trade). The lower subcategories are used in some items, so you can try those too. A free text search is of course available like before.
97/Jan/16
- WebEc v.3.1 was published.
97/Jan/07
- Petrus Kaartinen made a guillotine
script that blows WebEc to pieces! If you haven't already noticed the better search
results in the form of smaller files, try the search.
96/Dec/15
- I combined the Information Systems page with the Guides page.
96/Dec/13
- I took out most of the outdated gopher entries. If the server was not contacted, the
entry was deleted anyway. Most of the information is on the www-servers nowadays as was
pointed out on many of the gophers.
96/Dec/12
I got to know that WebEc
will be a part of the WWW Virtual Library. I suggested the interface
to Bill.
96/Oct/26
I got mail from Argus:
"Your guide has been accepted for inclusion in the Clearinghouse for Subject-Oriented Internet
Resource Guides. We have selected it as the Guide of the Month for November 1996."
96/Oct/02
- WebEc v.2.4 was published.
96/Sep/15
- Added other services that use JEL classification system to sub-pages' menus. Also
started to use tables in the menus.
96/Aug/24
- Finished working on the new looks of WebEc. Made two animations too. One for the
search page and another as the [NEW] -indicator.
96/Aug/01
96/Jul/15
- Started working on the new looks of WebEc.
96/Jul/02
- WebEc v.2.3 was published.
96/Jun/22-96/Jun/24
- We had a Grrand meeting in Eitorf, Germany! Among many other new things to come, Markus promised to make more
goodies for WebEc and RFE too.
96/Jun/07
96/Apr/23
- I checked the language with The Kinder, Gentler Validator
96/Apr/22
- Added a "surfaround" to WebEc's JELlish pages. Every 1st level heading is
accompanied with arrows that point to the previous and next page.
96/Apr/11
- I got mail from the McKinley Group: "Your
Internet site has been reviewed and rated by The McKinley
Group's professional editorial team. We are delighted to designate your resource as a
"3-Star" site."
96/Apr/10
- WebEc v.2.2 was published.
96/Mar/11
- I'm tired of doing this. Too much junk-mail.
96/Mar/06
- I put links on every category's menus pointing to Lycos and Alta Vista. The links
produce lists of what the search engines know about the title of the category. You can
refine the search yourself.
96/Feb/16
96/Feb/12
- I got mail from 2ask: "This site was rated among the "Top 100 On The
Planet" by the reviewers of 2ask - Your Gateway To The Internet!"
96/Jan/15
96/Jan/02
- WebEc 2.1 was published. (Second year and first update). I corrected some errors
and now WebEc should look better without images on.
95/Dec/20
- I saw that our University had started to use the search services of Ihmemaa (Wonderland in a non-Finnish language
;-)) and rushed to do the same for WebEc too. (This service was not functional
anymore in December 1997.)
95/Dec/15
95/Nov/23
- I noticed that WebEc was nominated to Coomb's Best Of 1995
Contest. Thanks for the nominator (for last year too.) And especially to all 4 of U who voted for WebEc in 1995 :-).
95/Nov/15
- WebEc v.1.5 was published.
95/Nov/13
- Added links to every sub-page so you can search Bill Goffe's RFE (Resources for
Economists on the Internet) and NetEc (Working papers around the world) with keywords.
Thanks to Timo Harmo for making this idea
work sensibly. Look for "WP" and "RFE" in the subpages' menus. After
the search is completed, you can easily change the database to search (BibEc, CodEc,
WoPEc, RFE) and use the same keywords if you wish. The NetEc databases used in the
search are located in the UK or US depending on the location of the mirror of WebEc.
95/Oct/30
- WebEc was AutoSurfed with
Mosaic. It's
an easy way to check the validity of the URL's listed.
95/Oct/24
- The
-image was added to every
heading. It points to the top of the page. The
's
were given a function on the main page (try).
95/Oct/17
- An announcement about WebEc was sent to What's New Too!, Einet Galaxy, Yahoo ,
Starting Point, Web Crawler, Harvest, Infoseek, Whole Internet Catalog, WWWWorm, Open Text
Web Index, Apollo, Jump Station and NIKOS. Lycos had visited WebEc already as well
as Starting Point.
95/Oct/16
- The WebEc mirror at wustl was
announced.
95/Sep/28
- A graph showing the monthly requests for econ.html & WebEc start pages was added on
this page. And another for WebEc requests only to the main page. The later was
later taken here.
95/Sep/21
- Short cut menus were added to those pages which contain many subcategories.
95/Sep/12
95/Sep/01
95/May/23
- Thomas suggested an
association to me with NetEc and
suggested the name "WebEc" (which I could not resist ;-)). I started to
develope ideas about collaboration, categories etc.. WebEc started as the late
"Economics WWW Page at Helsinki"
re-organized. (One weekend in June when wifey was abroad; and the kids learned how to use
the fridge. :-))
In 1994
- When I submitted a my entry to the Directory of Economistst
(NA), George Greenwade picked the URL from my sig and gave the name (NA)
to my page on 17th of May 1994. The Economics WWW Page at Helsinki was updated
continuously during 1994-1995.
Later in 1993
- I got lost in the Web and started to make a list about the stuff on the Web that
interested me and I found useful. The first effort to organize my Cello bookmarks were done then.
1993
Summer of 1992
- Timo showed me how a gopher works. I
wondered why I need to know what students have for lunch in Australia ... :-)
1989-1991
- I wrote and run regressions with a computer.
